Markus Wanzeck graduated from Zeitenspiegel Reportageschule, a journalism academy specialised in print feature stories. In 2008 he co-founded the reporters’ network Textsalon and the journalism office Textsalon Berlin. He writes for German newspapers and magazines, including mare, Spiegel Online, and DIE ZEIT. Since April 2011 he works for Stuttgart-based Zeitenspiegel Agency as reporter and editor. Research trips have led him to Afghanistan, Ethiopia, China, Iceland, Japan, Malawi, Nepal, Singapore, and Rwanda.
In 2010 Markus Wanzeck took part in a “Discovery Tour” through the German state of Saxony and the Chinese province Sichuan together with his Chinese colleague Li Fangfang. Their tour was part of the project Germany and China – Moving ahead together initiated by the German Federal Foreign Office.
In October 2009 he researched a feature story in Nepal with the help of a kontext scholarship. The project was in collaboration with his Hungarian colleague, Balázs Szász, and the Australian photographer, Sally Bierman. The feature story has been published in brand eins magazine.
In spring 2009 he worked at the newspaper China Daily in Beijing as scholar of the journalist exchange programme Media Ambassadors China – Germany.
In 2008 he was elected in the Top 30 under 30’s list of young German speaking journalists by the magazine Medium Magazin.
In 2007 he was awarded the prize Marion-Dönhoff-Förderpreis by the Robert Bosch Foundation.
